Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
Dario was an enthusiastic guide for our small tour of 6. He was knowledgeable, showing us illustrations throughout the 3-hour tour which were helpful to our understanding of the Forum and Colosseum. We did not see any other guides doing this. Dario was also concerned for our safety while walking on uneven surfaces and amongst throngs of people. We highly recommend a semi-private tour like this. It is well worth the additional cost.

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
Not my first tour of the Colosseum and I still learned a lot. Access to new areas that have opened up since before Covid and as ever you can really feel the atmosphere. Not the cheapest tour perhaps but great value. The guide (herself an archeologist) was clearly very passionate.

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
This was a fantastic tour. They had just completed the walkways through the floor of the Colosseum during Covid. My kids are major history buffs and the guide was excellent with them. We all learned a lot and we were able to see things that were available because of our small group. I would not recommend for little little kids as it is a lot of walking and not stroller friendly. If your kids or you are into history this a great tour.

Skip-the-Line Guided Group Tour of Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill
We had Barbara who was very passionate and knowledgeable about the colosseum and the surrounding areas. Palatine Hill was so impressive and our favourite, even better jumping the long ques . We will definitely recommend using viator, best decision we made.

Colosseum & Prison of St. Peter
Excellent tour. Self guided on the prison portion. Difficult to find our start point but with some effort we did it. You must do a skip the line into the Colosseum or you’ll wait all day and not get any of the finer points.

Skip-the-Line Colosseum Ticket with Optional Tour Guide Access Upgrade
Our experience with City Walkers was a 10/10. Very well organised from the start and our guide had extensive knowledge about the history of the Colosseum. She brought the Colosseum to life with her descriptions and images. Thank you for an amazing tour.

Skip the line Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small Group Walking Tour
The most memorable part was my tour guide Alice explaining to us how the games in the Colosseum used to work. She did a great job explaining and making sure we understood everything.

Colosseum tour
Great tour with a group of about 40 people. This is a very popular and crowded tourist site, so we were glad we had a guide to help explain the different aspects and guide us thru the building. At times it was too crowded to even read the plaques, so was best to hear our guide explain it. The Colosseum is awesome and would highly recommend this tour.

Wheelchair Accessible Skip the line Colosseum,Pantheon, Trevi & Rome Highlights
Our tour guide, Maria, was outstanding. She was very knowledgeable, showing and telling us interesting facts about the Colosseum. She also was very accommodating to our physical needs. Making sure we could take breaks to rest when needed and keeping us safe.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
