Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the tour and material for it. He also was more than willing and even offered to take pictures throughout of families/couples to remember the experience. So sweet also!

By far the best tour we took in Italy because of our guide Lorenzo!

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
This tour was a highlight of our trip to Italy especially because of our guide, Lorenzo. He was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and thorough. Our tour included Palatine Hill, The Forum and the Colosseum which we covered at the perfect pace to keep everyone in my family engaged but not rushed. My 22 year old son said he could have spent several more hours listening to Lorenzo talk about the history and significance of Rome and frankly I agree. I cannot recommend this tour enough!

Colosseum Arena Floor, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
I was under the impression from the information provided that the tour would cover the underground part of the Colosseum as were other participants of this tour but it did not, which was disappointing and misleading. I think we missed parts of the Roman Forum part of tour. I think the tour guide was great and very informative.

Self-Guided Tour Colosseum Skip-the-Line Ticket
Just hear about the history of the Colosseum and seeing where people sat for their status. Also where they kept the animals and how they used the animals.

Small Group Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour
Good history of the Colosseum, but too much of the tour was taken up there which left very little time fit the Forum. We totally missed Palestine Hill.

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
Exceptional tour of Colosseum, Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum. The excellent historical perspective provided by our very knowledgeable Guide exceeded our expectations. The route taken was great. Skip the line was a huge benefit as many, many people were in que to enter. Highly recommend this great and special tour.

Full Day Combo: Vatican and Colosseum Skip the Line Guided Tour
There are two tour guides - one for the Colosseum and another for the Vatican. Both did an exceptional job and we learned a lot. With this tour, you’ll need to walk on your own between the two locations. There was plenty of time to stop for a quick lunch. The Vatican tour did not include the second floor.

Definitely a VIP Experience

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
Outstanding, even on a cold day! I’ve visited the Colosseum previously but this tour brought it to life. Seeing the underground portion was fascinating and first and second floors as well. Certainly lived up to VIP status, small group added to 5* experience. Elisabetta was excellent. Her depth of knowledge is impressive and she is a pleasure to have had as a guide.

Alongside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the Colosseum is in the center of Rome, just across the street from the Colosseo station on Line B of the city's underground metro system, which also stops at the main Termini train station.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
