Golden House of Nero (Domus Aurea)

Via della Domus Aurea,1, 00184, Rome, Italy

The Basics

Nero’s Golden House—designed primarily for the ruler’s leisure and entertainment and named for its facade decorated in marble and gold leaf—covered much of the area around the Palatine, Esquiline, and Oppian Hills in the heart of ancient Rome. The palace originally had more than 300 rooms exquisitely decorated with precious ivory, mosaics, frescoes, gem-studded ceilings, and grand fountains. Among the most important architectural aspects were two dining rooms flanking an octagonal room, the dome ceiling of which could be rotated to look like the sky. There were also sweeping gardens with an artificial lake and a colossal statue of the emperor. Today only around 20 percent of the original complex is still standing, including 30 rooms that reopened to the public in 2014.

You can view the palace’s architecture and art, more than 2,000 years old, only as part of a hard-hat Domus Aurea tour led by an archaeologist guide, so booking ahead is imperative, especially in summer. Tours of the Golden House include a virtual reality experience: you don augmented reality 3D glasses to see what the palace would have looked like in its heyday. Many tours combine a visit to Nero’s house with the nearby Colosseum and Roman Forum.

Nero's golden house does not disappoint. Well worth a visit.
We went to Domus Aurea about 6 years ago and at the time the trees were still in situ over the site and water dripped down the walls. There is a huge difference now as the trees have been removed and the whole site is dry. There was an exhibition taking place at the time we went so we did not see all the rooms. We watched a film which showed what it would have been like in Nero's time and the vibrant colours of the rooms and ceilings are what jumped out at you. It is well worth a visit if you are not claustrophobic.

Domus Aurea Tour, The Golden House of Nero
Unfortunately, there were no headphones making hearing guide very difficult with large numbers of people. Headsets for VR should be cleaned between usages.

Nero's Golden House restoration site tour
Domus Aurea is something I never saw before. The magic of seeing the Roman frescoes and mosaics with my own eyes and the virtual reality show displaying the original state of Domus Aurea was mind blowing. I tell everyone I know to get there. I only took one star of because the offering on Viator is about twice as expensive as when booked directly on the site of Domus Aurea. I figured this out one day to late

Nero's Golden House restoration site tour
This place was really interesting and thoroughly enjoyed it! The experience ended with a virtual reality presentation that was amazing and provided a glimpse of how spectacular this house was when it was new. Our guide was insightful and informative. I do need to mention that we had a very difficult time finding this place. We finally arrived 15 minutes early. We tried to enter and the workers in the lobby were nasty and rude.

Domus Aurea Guided Walking Tour
Amazing amazing amazing! Some of the frescoes were only restored 45 days before our tour. Our guide was the coolest, loved his sense of humor. I was his Isis! And of course the VR brought it all together and let u see what it really looked like when Nero lived there. The person meeting you with your tickets needs to stand right in front of the entrance door however and not down the hill. Almost didn’t find her in time. And the air conditioning was definitely a plus in the 100 degrees.

Domus Aurea Guided Walking Tour
We only heard about this Guided Walking Tour of Domus Aurea from a relative as he had done this tour previously, even the taxi driver that took us to the meeting place had never heard of Domus Aurea so we had a few issues finding the location and meeting place. The tour guide was very informative and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Our guide Patrick was very informed about the History of Nero's Palace. The Virtual Tour in the end was exceptional by allowing us to witness how the palace probably looked in the First Century. Amazing ! Take a sweater !

The Rediscovery of Nero’s Palace

After Nero’s suicide, subsequent emperors Vespasian, Titus, and Trajan buried Nero’s domus to build their own palaces above. The last of these buildings were Trajan’s Baths, under which the complex was rediscovered in the 15th century. Before the site was excavated and opened to the public, Renaissance artists including Pinturicchio and Raphael would lower themselves down inside the buried villa on ropes to study its intricate frescoes and decorations.
