The Basics

Lake Rotorua is surrounded by a geothermal playground and offers a variety of activities for travelers. Visitors may take a cruise through the Ohau Channel, which connects with Lake Rotoiti, and relax with a soak at the remote Manupirua Thermal Springs. Tour options include kayaking along the lakeshore, jetting around on a speedboat, or hurtling over falls on a white-water rafting trip.

Among other specialized tours are seaplane flights, which include a thrilling water takeoff and landing, and helicopter tours that offer aerial views of the city and lake. Adventure travelers may opt for a solo or tandem parasailing experience above Lake Rotorua. Horseback rides and 4WD buggy tours take travelers off the beaten path. Combine your adventure with a day trip to the Blue and Green lakes and bubbling geysers.

Good choice for the money!
This was a great tour! They made it so easy the whole way from checking in the day before to make sure they had the correct pick up time and location. There is a lot of time in the van driving though, so be prepared to be sitting a lot and on windy roads so if you get car sick easy. All three activities were great though! Highly recommend

Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland
Excellent tour and driver/guide! Timely, friendly, helpful. Great tour to really interesting places. The glow worms in the caves are amazing; the bubbling mud and erupting geysers at Te Puia were spectacular, and the other stops along the way were all just great. A wonderful day - thanks!

Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland
I really loved the Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Day Trip. The tour directors were very knowledgeable and made the tours fun. In Rotorua we visited the geysers, saw a kiwi and visited the Māori School of Crafts. We were given a delicious buffet lunch and had lots of time to shop for souvenirs. Waitomo Caves blew my mind with its beauty and is a must for anyone travelling to Auckland. I would definitely recommend these tours.

Long but awesome day

Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland
A fascinating day from start to finish. The van was comfortable and we appreciated the small group size which encouraged getting acquainted with fellow tourists from around the world. Both drivers were cordial and full of information. The geothermal sights at Rotorua were awesome, and the rain only enhanced the mystery. Viewing the craft training areas and talking with the craftspeople gave us a deeper appreciation for the skill and deep cultural learning that go into the stone and wood carvings and weddings of the Māori people. The caves and glow worms were a beautiful finish to a great day of exploration. Our only complaint is the long day of driving to reach the sites, but despite the rain the countryside was beautiful and our excellent drivers made good time. Big thanks to Chris for delivering my left behind jacket to our hotel!

Katoa Jet Boat tour on Lake Rotorua
I took my grandson and his Mum on this and found it to be informative and fun.....even if Kevin did have to keep dodging all those imaginery rocks in the middle of the lake. My grandson is 9 and thought is was awesome, his grandmother much older and not enjoying the turns as much as he did.

When to Get There

Lake Rotorua is open year-round. Sunny days in warmer months are ideal for water sports, but mud baths and thermal pools are perfect in winter.

What’s in the Lake?

Though it’s not as large as neighboring Lake Taupo and not as nice for swimming, Lake Rotorua offers plentiful activities and views. The 920-foot (280-meter) elevation makes Rotorua’s water cooler than some other lakes in the region. The water’s green hue comes from sulfur and minerals. The lake is also alive with fish; go fly fishing for trout and try to reel in a big one!
