Te Puia

Te Puia, Rotorua, New Zealand

The Basics

Admission tickets and guided tours through Te Puia usually include a visit to the Kiwi House for a look at this nocturnal national bird housed in a dark enclosure. In the national weaving and carving schools, you can watch Maori students re-create the traditional arts of their ancestors.

For what is arguably the best evening in Rotorua, come in the evening to experience Te Po—a traditional ceremony andhangi feast (food cooked in a traditional in-ground oven), along with a music and dance performance. Travelers can also visit Te Puia as part of a Rotorua sightseeing tour, an eco tour, or an excursion focused on arts and crafts.

Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Te Puia from Auckland
Even though I experienced heavy rain in Auckland on this day, I still thought the trip was very interesting and meaningful. Both the Glowworm Cave and the Maori Cultural Village are worth visiting. If you want to watch the magic of nature and understand the local aboriginal culture, then this trip is very suitable for you.

Grant greeted us right on time. He gave us granola bars and water (much appreciated). Later in the afternoon, he offered us snacks. He was very helpful, caring, and informative. The tour was beyond expectations. The visit to the Māori center was fabulous glimpse into the culture, art and life of the indigenous people.

Loved the Maori school in session for wood carving and weaving at Te Puia. Waitamo Caves is a great combined experience in caves and biolumminesent creatures. Excellent guide and experience overall.

Great cultural show/ concert. Seeing the geysers was fun. They had 3 kiwi birds in their kiwi house that were easy to see. Hangi lunch buffet was fabulous.

A Magical Trip to Middle Earth and a Truly wondrous Maori Cultural Visit

Hobbiton & Rotorua Small Group Tour incl Te Puia, Hangi Buffet Lunch & Concert
The People at Hobbiton were absolutely wonderful and amazing! A person (not in our group) had a bit of a fall, and the staff did everything to help her out and made this our trip even better, by showing such compassion. The site is worth the 15,000 mile trip. Out Tour operators were knowledgeable, and very helpful. The Maori Culture Center is beautiful and amazing. Not well suited for people with mobility difficulties, but they made efforts to help. The unfortunate mishap was the Viator booked us for a Hangi luncheon (sort of the Maori version of a Hawaiian Luau) that didn't exist. Not the first miscommunication from Viator. Hobbiton and Te Puia were both wonderful!

Rotorua Small Group Tour incl Te Puia, Traditional Maori Buffet Lunch & Concert
This was an extremely interesting excursion. Te Puia was the vest cultural center we have seen. The welcoming ceremony and performance inside were very well done and informative. The sacred artwork and Māori educational center were fantastic. The geysers were beautiful. Seeing a kiwi was a check on the bucket list. The lunch was delicious, lots of choices with vegan options. Our driver was great. We learned a lot about the Māori culture and appreciated all they shared it was extremely interesting. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Te Puia from Auckland
Today’s tour was 10/10 from start to finish. The glow worms and Waitomo Caves were like nothing I have ever seen before, just amazing. Rotorua was spectacular, truly something to behold. It was also wonderful as a cultural experience, learning about Māori culture. The day was made even more enjoyable by our guide, Grant. He was knowledgeable, interesting and taught me a lot about New Zealand. I would recommend this tour to anyone and everyone!

Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Te Puia from Auckland
If you trip is based in Auckland, like ours was, this is a great trip to get out and see the culture and nature of the countryside. It is a LONG day so be prepared for that. This tour company has some communication issues, so you need to stay on top of them. Our tour bus broke down but they were able to call in a favor and get us a new ride, so we did not miss half the trip, so we honestly and truly appreciated their above and beyond service!

Amazing cultural experience at Maori center

Rotorua Highlights Small Group Tour Including Te Puia from Auckland
I highly recommend this trip as a learning adventure and cultural enrichment trip. However, do not over plan, as there is just enough time to enjoy the entirety of the center without rushing. The hangy buffet was wonderful and worth the extra cost. We watched the geysers erupt for 30+ minutes as we dined and enjoyed the gorgeous veranda. The drive is long but Michael our driver and guide made it interesting and fun. He is amazing!

Nice full day tour to Rotorua from Auckland

Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Te Puia from Auckland
Nice full day tour to Rotorua from Auckland. Tour operator picked us up on time from our Auckland hotel. Waitomo glow worms cave boat ride was short due to high water level inside the cave. Rotorua hot spring geysers and hot mud ponds are fantastic. Tour driver explained well about various places during the tour and answered all questions.
