First off let me start by saying this wasn't what I was hoping for, but that's only because our only experience with a large tour group was 15 years ago when we did a wine tasting tour of Napa. In that respect this experience was very similar.
When we met at the meeting point it was exactly the same as Napa, many tour companies trying to herd their guests onto one of many tour busses.
First stop Siena. Our tour guide Stephano was very good, explaining the history of the city and the different sites we'd want to see after the guided tour was finished.
We started in the city square where Stephano gave us a quick history of the square and the layout of the city before walking up to the cathedral. The cathedral was breathtaking, with great artwork from a lot of the Italian artists of the time including Michaelangelo who lived in Siena for several years in his 20s.
After a quick cappuccino and a toilette break it was back to the bus for a noon wine tasting and lunch.
The wine was amazing and the pours were generous, maybe a little too generous as some of the tour members imbibed a little too much, but not to the point where they were overly obnoxious as our Napa experience.
From there it was onto San Gimignano, an old fortress town with lots of history that Stephano explained to us before arriving. Once there we were free to explore, but as with Siena only had about an hour before we needed to be back to the bus, but no matter, unlike Siena, San Gimignano to us was nothing more than a big fortress renovated to have store fronts built into the bottom floors of each part of the fortress. That said, being built on a hill it did have some spectacular views of the surrounding area. All in all it was probably the least favorite of the cities we visited. After our 55 minutes were up we again headed back to the bus before departing for Pisa.
This is where things got a little crazy for me and my wife, and really drove home for us the feeling that the entire tour felt rushed. The bus took us along what's probably considered one of the most scenic routes through Tuscany, but at what felt like about 100kms/ hour it was completely nuts with our driver ripping through these undulating, twisty turny narrow roads, tailgating vehicles in front of us to the point where people would pull off the road to let our bus go tearing by. This is also a road a lot of bike riders take when touring Tuscany and as a bike rider it infuriated me the driver would be so wreckless in what felt like a rush to get to our next town of Pisa. If it was a memorable scenic ride they were hoping to provide they failed miserably and would've been better off taking the highway instead.
We finally made it to our last destination of Pisa, but for us the mood was somewhat lost after the terrifying bus ride from San Gimignano. After departing the bus our tour guide led us to the square, which even at 500PM was still very busy. Another 50 minutes to take it all in before we had to depart. We would've like more time to check out the church and other attractions, but time was short and we needed to get back to the bus.
The trip back to the terminal was uneventful, thankfully all highway during afternoon rush hour, so we were finally able to relax on the 90 minute ride back k to Florence.
So in a nutshell the towns were all beautiful in their own unique way, Siena was far and away our favorite, the wine tasting and lunch were enjoyable, but everything felt very rushed, but I understand it's a lot to take in, and a lot of kilometers to cover in an 8 hour tour.
It will be interesting to see if Viator post my less than.4 star review.
