What To Expect

Experience the Tower of London’s long and stormy history. Make your own way to the Tower, once inside explore independently, take an audio tour (additional fee) or join a 1-hour guided tour led by a Yeoman Warder or ‘Beefeater.’ Yeoman-led tours depart every 30 minutes from the Tower entrance. Learn the Tower’s origin story of 1066 and how it evolved from William the Conquerer's stronghold to a royal palace, armory, royal mint, prison and gruesome execution place.

Pass under the famous ravens that perch near Wakefield Tower and lose yourself in myth and history as you visit the White Tower and its Royal Armories collection, the Bloody Tower and Traitors’ Gate. Hear the tale of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's unfortunate second wife, who passed through Traitors’ Gate in 1536 and was quickly tried for adultery and executed. Walk to Tower Gate, the execution site where Boleyn and many others met their fateful ends.

Despite its chilling reputation, the Tower of London has also been the cradle for the British Crown Jewels since the 14th century. Get a close-up look at this remarkable regalia, the ultimate symbol of the British monarchy and the centerpiece of coronations since 1661. Don’t miss the famous 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond.

After you've visited the major sites, stroll along the Wall Walk and head into the Medieval Palace to admire the beautifully reconstructed spaces. Take your time soaking up this cornerstone of English history.

The tour with the yeoman guard was entertaining and very informative the tower site itself was larger and held more artifacts then I could have imagined a very good way to spend the day
      Visit to the Tower

WoW everything I expected, Crown Jewels were amazing and the history of this place just blows you away.
Get a ticket with a self guided tour audio.
      Patricia_G, Sept 2023
The tour we booked with the beefeaters was about a 3 star. The reason I gave it this rating was 1) upon arrival we were told an audio device had to be purchased separately from our ticket. 2) nothing was explained about the beefeater part of the tour that was in the beginning of the grounds. This appeared to us as we walked back to the beefeaters that it would be a repeat of what we just saw. Very unhappy about the misunderstanding of the tickets.
      Tower of London Wow

We highly recommend. Beefeater (Gary) was excellent . We was knowledgeable, entertaining and very informative. Crown Jewels displace was impressive. A must see
Not what we expected - No Beefeater's around to give tour.
      Jean_G, Sept 2023
The tour of the Tower was fine but we tried to join a Beefeater tour that we purchased - no luck.. Never saw any of these giving a tour.
A must do while in London!
      Rosemary_T, Sept 2023
The Tower of London was filled with so much history. We especially enjoyed the stories given by the Beefeaters we spoke with. The displays of the weaponry and armor were very impressive. There’s lots of stairs so prepare for a good workout.
      Great day out

Lots of history, specifically love the Tudor and medieval exhibits and the Crown Jewels. Buying a ticket online saved a lot of queueing.
Excellent Tour but too many people being guided by the Yeoman of the Guard.
      CHRISTINE_D, Sept 2023
The Tower of London is amazing, there is so much to see and we greatly enjoyed our visit. We would, however, add that we abandoned the Guided Tour quite early on. The Yeoman of the Guard who took our group was very good but there were well over one hundred people trying to get close enough to hear what he was telling us so we slipped away and walked all round the Tower, reading all the details as we went from tower to tower, area to area.
      History presented as never before.
      Brian_H, Sept 2023
The tour was outstanding! First, of course, the Tower itself. But our tour guide was wonderful. He knew the history down to incredible detail and he injected appropriate humor in his presentation. When in London this tour should be at the top of your to do list.

We thought the Beefeater Tour was an actual tour. Anyone that walked into the facility could join the "tour". There were around 100 people listening to each Beefeater. Not at all what we expected.
Great tour although value added by Viator unclear
      Douglas_H, Sept 2023
We thoroughly enjoyed the narrative provided by the Beefeater guide; he combined history with humour. We had sufficient time afterwards to explore other aspects of the Tower of London on our own. Our only criticism of the tour is that it is the same tour offered by the group that maintains this and other British attractions, but at a much higher price. We originally booked our tour through this group, but when we checked our meeting time, it said 6 AM. So we booked through Viator in hopes of being able to cancel our original booking. We had not yet the fine print that said both tickets could not be cancelled, so we ended up paying for the same tour through two different groups. We later found that the 6 AM meeting time was a computer glitch and that we could have shown up anytime after 10 AM. We still enjoyed the tour but the value added by Viator was unclear.
      Very informative tour
      Daniel_W, Sept 2023
Beefeater was very knowledgeable and humorous. After the tour there was lots to see on our own so allow at least three hours for everything. It is right next to Tower Bridge (duh) so we walked over it and back as well - took about 15 minutes with photo stops. It is the iconic bridge we all think of when we see London but many think it is London Bridge. There is a tour of it as well but we were getting tired so we didn’t go.

A great experience to view the Crown Jewels, palace, chapel, ravens, armoury , torture chamber etc. We did do the Beefeater part of the tour as we had a fair bit of knowledge about the Tower beforehand. If I came back I would do the audio tour, highly recommend this tour.
      Excellent value for money
      Caroline_B, Sept 2023
Apart from the wonderful history, the whole atmosphere of the place was terrific and so well organised. The tour of the Crown Jewels is was a little underwhelming but the visual electronics was so professionally done and very impressive.
      Entertaining, educational, engaging and terrific!
      Lisa_B, Sept 2023
Tour guide was amazing — so entertaining as well as funny as well as extremely knowledgeable, helpful and educational and engaging. Made the whole experience so fascinating and a highlight of our trip to London.

      Jeanne_D, Sept 2023
Very interesting place to visit, but what happened to the dungeon torture chamber...nothing like it used to be. Tour guide was great...made it interesting.
      Great tour.
      Annmarie_S, Sept 2023
Yeoman’s tour was very informative and entertaining. Learned quite a bit about the darker side of British royalty. Well worth including in your trip to London.
      Loved!
      Samantha_B, Sept 2023
Loved this self paced tour. The Tower was so much fun learning of its history and all. And viator was so easy to use and we didn’t have any trouble at all with our tickets! Would 100% do it again!
