What To Expect

Make your own way to the starting point in downtown Ohakune to get outfitted with the provided helmet, bike and safety kit. The staff provides a safety briefing, ride orientation, and assistance with the optional free app that you can load on your own device.

When ready, board the shuttle that transports you and your bike to the Horopito end of Old Coach Road. By starting in Horopito, you begin almost 500 feet (150 meters) higher than Ohakune, which means that you can enjoy an easier bike ride overall that is mostly downhill.

Old Coach Road hugs the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, and offers varied scenery, including open farmland, native bush, train tunnels, and viaducts. Check out the steel lattice of the Taonui Railway Viaduct, and the concrete piers for the bridge over Haeremaere Stream. Take in views of the Waimarino Plains, rimu trees (endemic to New Zealand), and the historic Hapuawhenua Viaduct.

Learn about the history of the Ohakune Coach Road and the railway construction from informative panels that are displayed along the route.

Near the end of the trail around Ohakune, you have the option to go along a pump track for a beautiful ride along the Mangawhero River. Your 4-hour ride ends when you return to your starting point in Ohakune.

Everything went well. We've had a great time cycling at our own pace and enjoying the stunning landscapes of the Ruapehu mountain and native bushes. Of a special enjoy was crossing the old viaduct, while it was slightly scary, it is safe and opens new views to the valley. I must say that the track is relatively easy one. We’ve ride mostly downslope with a few easy up hills. I am totally satisfied and recommend it to everyone.

Fantastic ride through beautiful forest with great views and engineering marvels to enjoy. Track quite manageable for us - we ride but in our 60s had not tried downhill mountain biking before. This is more of a track ride with some lovely downhill sections. Great value for money.
awesome experience
