The journey is challenging, and requires certain hiking experience which I didn’t prepare for. Fortunately, our guides Daniel and AJ are super nice and helpful looking after each one of us. We took a few breaks to rest and take photos, they waited patiently and never pushed us to carry on the journey.

Spiritual and Amazing, a hike into another land

The colors were breathtaking. A beautiful juxtaposition of lime green aside rust red. The sun made the experience warm, while the mountain top breeze kept it refreshing. Our guide, Daniel, made this a once in a lifetime experience. He was warm, personable, grounded, and knowledgable. We felt extremely connected to the land, it's history, and it's spirituality. We felt like we could have spent all day there. The hike was manageable, but required physical skill. Our tour had only 5 people in it, which really aided the personal aspects of the hike. The "run" down into the caldera was awesome! We were picked up at a nearby coffee shop, and the ride out was reasonable, although be prepared for some 4x4 wheeling to get to the start of the hike. As with all excursions in NZ, make sure you call ahead to get your pickup time and location sorted out. Could not recommend more. Thank you to Daniel for a fantastic experience!

Beautiful, but short trip for the money

Beautiful place and excellent friendly guides, but felt very rushed. Would have liked to have a lot more time to take photos and enjoy the site after spending so much money to see it.

We had an amazing time in the tour. It wasnt the best of weathers when we went there but it was nothing less than spectacular. Our tour guide nicole was very helpful and she lets me take as much time as we need especially going down to the crater.

Such a prime tour! Massively recommend this to any travelers looking to scope out the mountain, grab some epic views, take in the deeply entrenched Maori culture and understand more about the formation and events of this area. The hike is well fun and not grossly challenging, just enough to get your heart rate up and make you feel alive. The tour operators are ultra nice and provide a laid back, comfortable vibe for the crew and set a good energy. The scree run into the crater is a highlight, too. Wicked fun and your shoes get pummeled with loose rocks. Best! Get around this if you want an organic experience and want to plonk yourself amongst nature.

Your online write-up is totally inadequate and misrepresentative. This is a 750 foot elevation hike that involves a short distance of scrambling using hand-holds. There is also a 750 foot descent to the bottom of the crater through a steep scree field. All of this is on loose rock and stone under foot. Shame on you!

Excellent ! Graphic geology and amazing colours ! Guides were very helpful and relaxed and the scree run down into volcanoe was very unique ! Drive up to volcano in a off road bus was a rugged experience but well worth it !
