What To Expect

For the best whale-watching in Seattle, enjoy the beauty of San Juan Island on a whale-watching cruise from Friday Harbor, a quaint town on the island. San Juan Island is considered the best place to view orca whales because of the large salmon population, which is their primary food source. Salmon travel up and down the west coast of the island and some of the outlying areas, so it makes it a perfect place to see orca whale activity.

Climb on board the fast, new 55-foot MV Sea Lion, complete with a heated cabin, with windows, that seats up to 24 travelers. Add the walk-around deck and 40 or fewer guests can fit comfortably on this vessel.

While it’s not guaranteed that killer whales will be seen on this tour, there is more than a 90 percent chance. Plus, there is an even greater chance of seeing minke, humpback and gray whales. Seeing marine mammals, well, that’s a sure thing.

The crew were so excited about what they do that it made us more excited to go on the trip. Friday Harbor is OK. However we were only by the port so maybe further in Friday Harbor is beautiful. Also the whale watching was OK. Didn’t really get too close and you had to have binoculars to get a good look, but we did get to see whales so it was worth it. And crew did a great job pointing out different wild life.

Wow! What an incredible 2 days with San Juan Safaris. Firstly, I’d waited from the age of 7 to visit the islands and see orcas. My first trip we didn’t see orcas but we did see HUMPBACKS which just so incredible. The onboard crew were just so kind and knowledgeable. We saw an abundance of porpoise, eagles, seals it was such a lovely day. Second trip I’d heard the rumour that orcas had been spotted nearby and went straight away to book a trip. The staff remembered me from the previous trip and I booked on the next available trip out. It was an absolute dream. I finally saw orcas and we had a fun time watching the sea-lions too. My boyfriend was inspired by captain Eric and he now has a moustache too!! Honestly the crew were so knowledgeable, answered every question we all had and just had such a clear passion for the wildlife. It was the best day of my life and I can’t recommend trips with these guys enough.
