Boat ride across to the other side felt like we were going to a private island of steaming geothermal pools and mud pools, an adventure off the mainland. Really enjoyed the walk around, close-up to the action and nature but still safe on the trail. It was bigger than we expected and lots to see, not too crowded either so we could take our time. Does require a reasonable fitness level as quite a few steps to navigate.

Great place for a hike!

This was a great place to visit in our travels from Rotorua to Lake Taupo we stopped at this gem. After a ferry ride over the gorgeous lake we did a self guided hike through the trails. The geothermal activity was amazing to see up close and the cave was pretty cool too! Gorgeous hike that my 8 year old son had a blast doing!
Absolutely amazing

Incredible spectacle of colours
Helen_B, Aug 2020
Amazing spectacle, you wont be disappointed. I arrived on a fog filled morning in winter was chilly but that added to the ambience. You are taken across the lake on a short ferry ride to start the 2.5km walk around the thermals. There's a lot of stairs, that are safe and flat but watch your knees jarring coming down. The pathway climbs steadily (so reasonable fitness, not for the very elderly) up to different levels, for amazing views of steam mud blow holes coloured mineral glaciers, and amazing caves. Not suitable for pushchairs or buggies but young children can be carried in backpacks provided.
Awe inspiring experience

An amazing, awe-inspiring geothermal experience away from the crowds. Wonderful colours on the rocks, bubbling pools of water and mud. It’s a self-guided tour but clearly signed and explained. The short ferry trip across the lake gives added interest to the trip.
Absolutely recommend it, easy walk...

Absolutely recommend it, easy walk and so much to see. We were lucky to catch a small gyser too.
